SHOP STEWARD CREED
Recognizing that I volunteered as a Shop Steward, fully knowing the hazards to my job security that it may pose, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor and esprit de corps embodied in "Solidarity"
Acknowledging the fact that a shop steward is a more elite worker, who exists at the cutting edge of labor-management interactions, I accept the fact that, as a shop steward, my comrades will expect me to work harder and travel further, often on my own time
Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself well-informed with up-to-date knowledge, will always be there to represent my comrades whenever I am needed and will shoulder more than my share of the tasks, whatever they may be: 100% and then some
Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained activist who has stepped forward and sought the training and learning needed to prevail at the bargaining table and before the arbitrator
Energetically will I represent my comrades, to the fullest extent of the contract, law and regulation. I will never surrender, and will struggle with all my might: I will never leave my comrades to suffer injustices in the work place
Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude to fight on until fairness and justice in the work place are achieved
THE UNION STEWARDS PRAYER
Grant me, Oh Lord, the genius to explain to my brothers and sisters the policies and plans of our great union even though no one explains them to me
Give me the understanding that I may forgive the apathetic member, curb the overly ambitious member, and accept the views of the member who does nothing until I have done something...and then tells me what I should have done and how I should have done it.
Oh Lord, make me formidable in debate, logical in argument and fearless in confrontation. Let me be a lawyer, actor, mathematician, sage, philosopher, sociologist, and economist; pleasing, cajoling, threatening, and belaboring so that I make the best of a good case and a good case from no case at all.
Teach me, Oh Lord, to stand at all times with both feet firmly on the ground ... Even when I don't have a leg to stand on.
